A medical lab technician’s job is less complex than a technologist’s job and does not require as much schooling. Lab technicians generally receive an associate’s degree from a junior or community college. They can also earn a certificate from a teaching hospital or technical school. Different branches of the Armed Forces can also train a person to become a technician. Very few technicians have the opportunity to learn their skills on the job. Technicians can advance to technologists by furthering their education or accumulating job experience.

The salary of a technician depends on a few variables, which include, where a technician works, where they live, how much experience they have, and the complexity of their duties. The median annual earnings of clinical and medical laboratory techs were around $33,000 in recent years. The highest 10 percent earned more than $50,000 and the lowest 10 percent earned less than $22,000. Where you physically work can have a bearing on how much the average lab technician salary is annually. Technicians who worked at hospitals and universities earned the most and those who worked at medical laboratories or other ambulatory health care services earned the least.

A medical and clinical laboratory technologist performs more complex and detailed tests than a technician and usually is required to have a bachelor’s degree with a major in medical technology or one of the other life sciences. Some employers will accept technologists who have a combination of some education and on the job training, but the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act mandates that technologists who perform highly complicated examinations have at least an associate’s degree.

A clinical and medical laboratory technologist’s salary is also dependant on the aforementioned conditions. The median annual earnings of a technologist were $50,000. The highest 10 percent earned more than $70,000 and the lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,000. Technologists who worked in government labs earned the most and those who worked in universities earned the least.

This list above is just a basic list and  the job description of a dental assistant will vary from dentist office to office. Yes you will need schooling to obtain a job as a technician but, you will also receive on the job training once you are hired by an office. Every doctor operates their own office in the way that they see fit, and will teach you the tricks of the trade they have learned over theirs of experience. This can be a little tedious but is definately the best way to go about learning more than a school program can teach you.

How much can you expect to make as a dental assistant? Well the average dental assistant salary for a trade school graduate is between 33,000 and 40,000 per year. Your skill level and any internships you may have taken during your school years will help determine your starting technician salary. So you can see that you can really make a good living with only a couple years of schooling under your belt.

Most medical trade school courses can be completed in about two years and can earn you a nice yearly salary starting in the low 30’s to low 40’s. Some of these salaries include that of an x ray technician salary, Blood technician and Ultrasound Technician, Xray tech courses offered at x ray technician schools, dental assistant, and registered nurse.  If you are like me, I tend to stay away from biology and anatomy classes, this keeps me out of the medical field in most cases. Math and science are not my strong points so courses like automotive technology and culinary arts suite me nicely.

Attending trade schools are fast and too the point, allowing you hands on training before you ever enter the job field giving you a headstart to the career of your dreams. It is not wise to choose a career simply for monetary gain. If possible, choose a career that you can see yourself enjoying and sticking with throughout your life time.
